Buddha Eden Garden in Bombarral: Portugal's peace garden
Nestling in the heart of Portugal's Bombarral region, the Buddha Eden Garden is a haven of peace and serenity. Spread over some 35 hectares, this is one of the largest gardens in Europe dedicated to Asian culture and Buddhist philosophy. Let's discover together this exceptional place that combines history, art and spirituality.
History of Buddha Eden Garden
The origin of the Buddha Eden Garden is linked to an act of peaceful protest by its creator, Joe Berardo. The reasons? To protest against one of the greatest acts of cultural barbarism, but also to offer humanity a place of peace in homage to the Buddhas.
In 2001, when the giant Buddha statues in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, were destroyed by the Taliban, Berardo was deeply affected. He decided to respond to this cultural tragedy by creating a space dedicated to peace and reflection. Thus was born the Buddha Eden Garden, in homage to the lost statues.
A meditative walk
The park is full of references to Buddhist philosophy. From the very first steps, visitors are greeted by a path lined with golden sculptures representing 500 clay soldiers, reminiscent of the famous terracotta warriors of Xi'an in China.
As the tour continues, you'll discover tranquil lakes filled with koi carp, pagodas, meditation stones and, of course, countless Buddha statues. One of the centrepieces is the Great Golden Buddha, majestic and serene, watching over the gardens.
Art at the heart of the garden
But the Buddha Eden Garden is not just a tribute to Buddhism. It is also a place where cultures and the arts meet. As well as Asian references, the garden is home to contemporary works of art, African stone sculptures and installations by Portuguese and international artists. This diversity illustrates the founder's vision of a world united by art and culture.
Surrounded by beautiful avenues lined with trees and plants, you can admire different styles of statues, pagodas, giant Buddhas, various sculptures... 6,000 tonnes of marble and granite!
Visit the Buddha Eden Garden
Easily accessible from Lisbon, the garden is open to the public all year round. A small train allows visitors to explore the entire park, but walking is still the best way to take full advantage of the serenity of the setting. For wine lovers, the Quinta dos Loridos, on which the garden is located, also offers tastings of its famous sparkling wines.
Bombarral's Buddha Eden Garden is more than just a garden. It is a place of peace, meditation and cultural encounter. An invitation to reflect on human nature, tolerance and the preservation of the world's heritage. A must for any traveller in search of serenity in Portugal.
