It has become one of the most sought-after districts in the Portuguese capital. Campo de Ourique, located near Monsanto Park, above the alternative neighbourhood of Alcântara, is best known for being one of the city's only flat neighbourhoods. But Campo de Ourique has much more to offer!
Find out more about this family-friendly district, loved by expatriates.
The Campo de Ourique district of Lisbon is a hidden treasure away from the tourist hustle and bustle of areas like Alfama and Bairro Alto, offering an authentic experience of Lisbon life. This residential district, which has managed to retain its small village atmosphere within the big city, is renowned for its quality of life, its many local shops, its traditional markets and its green spaces.
A neighbourhood of restored heritage
The Campo de Ourique district was once farmland and home to "Quinta" (farmhouses).
In the 1930s, the district was the home of the famous Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, who lived at Rua Coelho da Rocha 16 for the last 15 years of his life. Today, his former residence, known as Casa Fernando Pessoa, has been converted into a cultural space. The other building at the heart of life in Campo de Ourique is its eponymous market. Built in 1934, this once traditional market underwent a major refurbishment in 2013. Although it remains a market where you can find fishmongers and greengrocers, the place is now famous for its friendly food court.
Gastronomy takes pride of place here, with a varied offering ranging from family-run canteens to more sophisticated restaurants. The district is also renowned for its pastelarias, where you can sample traditional Portuguese pastries.
A little Paris in Lisbon
Located close to the Amoreiras district, home to the Lycée Français Charles Lepierre, Campo de Ourique has established itself as a favourite area for expatriates. So much so, in fact, that an international school has been opened there.lIn 2017, the Redbridge School opened its doors in the heart of the district. Like the many French families who have settled here, Campo de Ourique is packed with shops selling very French products: the Baguettes et Cornets bakery, the Maître Renard cheese shop, the Talho do Campo butcher and the Pétillante wine shop are all located in the district.
The Jardim da Parada and the Jardim da Estrela are two important green spaces that bring a breath of fresh air to the city, perfect for a relaxing stroll or for enjoying a sunny afternoon.
Sweet living and trendy addresses
Expatriates aren't the only ones to have fallen under the spell of Campo de Ourique! Many Portuguese families have taken up residence here or come to stroll around at weekends. In the heart of the district, the charming Jardim da Parada hosts a craft market on Saturdays and a kiosk that is particularly popular with residents for a cool drink under the garden's majestic trees. Another sought-after feature is the high density of trendy shops and restaurants.
