The Oceanário de Lisboa: a deep dive into the marine world in the heart of the Portuguese capital

The Oceanário de Lisboa, often regarded as one of the largest and most impressive indoor saltwater aquariums in the world, is a true icon of the Portuguese capital. Since its inauguration in 1998 as part of the Lisbon World Expo, the aquarium has not only provided a window onto the wonders of the oceans, but has also played an active role in raising awareness of marine conservation.

It was designed by the American architect Peter Chermayeff. As well as keeping the message of the exhibition alive, his aim was to increase the cultural and educational offer in the country. He has perpetuated the link between Lisbon and the Atlantic Ocean..

In 2005, it became the first public aquarium in Europe to obtain ISO 9001 Quality, ISO 14001 Environmental and EMAS Eco-Management and Audit certification. In 2011, to expand the range of services on offer, in addition to the Edificio dos Oceanos on the water, the Edificio do Mar was built on land. The exhibition space was extended to include a section dedicated to temporary exhibitions. In 2015, in recognition of its educational, scientific and cultural value, the state classified Oceanario de Lisboa as a Public Service. Its sole shareholder is the Oceano Azul Foundation. Its mission is to work for a productive and healthy ocean for the benefit of the planet.

Out of a total of 7 million litres of salt water, the central aquarium contains 5 million litres. There are over 8,000 marine creatures of more than 500 different species. With 1 million visitors a year, it is Portugal's most popular public attraction.

The Oceanario de Lisboa is one of the three largest aquariums in Europe.

Location and access

Nestling in the heart of the Parc des Nations, Lisbon's modern district, the Oceanário boasts contemporary architecture and a privileged location on the banks of the Tagus estuary. Easily accessible by public transport, visitors can reach the Oceanário via the red metro line, getting off at Oriente station. From there, a short stroll through the Parc des Nations will take you directly to this star attraction.

Winter 2023 news

This winter, the Oceanário de Lisboa has a whole host of surprises in store for its visitors. The big news is the inauguration of the "Mysteries of the Abyss" exhibition, which plunges visitors into the depths of the ocean, where no sunlight reaches. Using innovative lighting technology and interactive installations, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to observe deep-sea creatures such as lanternfish, abyssal jellyfish and giant squid.

Another highlight this winter is the "Moonlight Encounters" programme. Every Friday evening in December, the Oceanário opens its doors after normal visiting hours for a magical nocturnal experience. The aquariums, lit by soft moonlight, offer a totally different perspective on marine life. What's more, experts are on hand for question-and-answer sessions, allowing visitors to learn more about the mysteries of nocturnal marine life.

Finally, in an ongoing effort to raise awareness of marine conservation, the Oceanário is launching its 'Every Drop Counts' campaign for winter 2023. This initiative aims to educate visitors about the importance of freshwater, the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and the steps that everyone can take to contribute to a more sustainable future.

The Oceanário's must-sees

In addition to the winter novelties, the Oceanário continues to offer its permanent exhibitions, which have fascinated millions of visitors over the years. The gigantic central aquarium, containing over 5 million litres of salt water, is the beating heart of the complex. Surrounding this impressive tank are several reconstructed habitats showcasing the flora and fauna of the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Antarctic oceans.

Among the most popular residents are the majestic sharks, graceful manta rays, sea lions and penguins, always ready to put on an entertaining show for visitors of all ages.
